Copan...Mayan Ruins
Wow are we behind on our blog. Getting to Copan was easy ... couple of imodium helped. arriving in Copan was an experience in itself. As we unloaded ourselves from the bus , thankful once again grateful for small bags, a couple of our travellers have very awkward, very large duffle bags on wheels thestreet was cobbled and leading over a little bridge just like an european village. Thought we might bump into Adam and Eva. Copan is so cute!!! it was very humid so we were at our very first Mayan ruins very early ...they are small compared to some we will see but the detail on the stelaes.. a bit like totem poles is incredible.. They only opened them up in1999.
The feeling of peace and serenity permeates through the place. It has been around since 1200b.c. at least. 24 sqkms of crumbling steps and temples ..we did not see all of it some is underground as well. The tree are so tall with roots intertwining through the stones and fallen rocks. We had a very funny guide and Niamh one of our very funny Irish girls kept hitting on him .. he was cute though. Once again our accomodation was A1 always set around a courtyard to take advantage of the cooling breezes and believe me we need all the help we can get.We also managed to score our first decent coffee in ages .By now I was feeling so much better.
